With 18 years of navigating Ecuador’s majestic peaks, we’ve witnessed nature’s grandeur and the challenges it presents. Among these challenges, none rival the awe-inspiring Cotopaxi Volcano.
From 2015 to 2017, Cotopaxi, one of Ecuador’s iconic volcanoes, erupted, reminding us of nature’s raw power. The eruptions, impactful and awe-inspiring, temporarily halted climbing activities. Yet, Cotopaxi, resilient as ever, settled, only to awaken once more in October 2022, prompting cautious measures from authorities.
In December 2022, Cotopaxi National Park cautiously reopened, initially allowing only day visits. Understandably, climbing remained prohibited due to safety concerns. However, recognizing Cotopaxi’s allure and significance, authorities collaborated with organizations like ASEGUIM to develop a safe approach for enthusiasts to resume climbing.
Against this backdrop, certified operators like us were granted the opportunity to resume climbing Cotopaxi, albeit under strict regulations. With the Ministry of Tourism and Environment’s trust, we’re tasked with leading climbers to Cotopaxi’s summit, ensuring safety and sustainability.
Standing tall at 5,897 meters (19,347 feet), Cotopaxi beckons adventurers with its perfect cone shape and breathtaking vistas. The climb, a test of endurance and skill, rewards climbers with an exhilarating sense of achievement atop one of the world’s highest active volcanoes.
Starting from the refuge at around 4,800 meters (15,748 feet), climbers face altitude-related challenges, culminating in a triumphant moment at the peak. Every step is a testament to determination, with views that are simply incomparable.
